M.S. in Data Science Online Curriculum
In this 30-credit-hour program, you’ll complete 15 credit hours of data science online courses before finishing the program with 12 credit hours in an area(s) of your choosing, including three focus areas:
- Cybersecurity
- Business Analytics
- Financial Crime
You can also design your own specialization and put the data to work in the field of your choice.
Then, choose between a three-credit capstone or thesis project to demonstrate your new expertise in a hands-on practicum or research project. The program is designed to be completed in as few as five continuous semesters of study, or about two years.
Online M.S. in Data Science Admission Requirements
Applying to our online master’s in data science program is straightforward, with no GRE or GMAT required. You’ll just need to submit the following:
- Completed application
- Minimum 3.0 on a scale of 4.0. Applicants with a GPA below the minimum may be admitted at the department’s discretion. A GPA letter will be required.
- No GRE or GMAT required.
- All students seeking enrollment must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Work experience in a related field is recommended but not required.
- Personal Statement: Describe your personal and professional goals and explain how this program will help you bring them to life.
- Resume: A detailed work history that highlights any experience that may be relevant to this program.
Transfer Credit
Transfer credit is awarded for courses taken at a regionally accredited college that are equivalent to those taught at Utica University and you’ve received a grade of “B” or better. Note that we require official transcripts from all colleges you’ve attended, as well as a transcript showing degree awarded.
Shortly after you receive your letter of admission, you will receive an evaluation of your transfer credits from the Registrar’s Office. If you want to review possible credit eligibility ahead of time, use TES®.
International Students
International Credential Evaluation of transcripts showing equivalency to a U.S. bachelor’s degree with minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for this program.
If English is not your first language, submit your test scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS.
Utica requires a TOEFL score of 550 written, 213 computer-based, or 79 internet-based. Utica requires a IELTS score of 6.0.

The Financial Crime specialization is made up of three, 3-credit courses that dive deep into investigative and analytical principles, as well as two 1.5-credit courses that focus on data-driven decision-making.

Familiarize yourself with innovative analytic approaches used to perform complex fraud analysis, including link analysis, data mining, advanced statistical tools, case management systems, and expert system approaches such as neural network early-warning software.

Michael McCarthy, Ph.D.
Program Director and Assistant Professor, Data Science
Michael McCarthy, Ph.D., served in the U.S. Army from 2000 to 2007 as an aviation officer and Black Hawk pilot. Dr. McCarthy’s data science work extends to a technology startup, the health care and nonprofit industries, and the social science sphere. His current research focuses on the fair, ethical, and responsible use of data analytics within society.
As a recipient of numerous grants, Dr. McCarthy’s research focuses on the social impacts of COVID-19 within communities and the technical bias inherent in artificial neural networks.
Dr. McCarthy also worked as an analyst for a Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He performed quantitative and qualitative analysis to improve inpatient and outpatient clinic flow, quantitative demographic analysis for strategic planning, coached and led Lean Six Sigma projects, and served as an innovation specialist.

Gregory Fulkerson, Ph.D.
Adjunct Lecturer, Data Science
Gregory Fulkerson, Ph.D., focuses on issues related to globalization, rurality, community, agriculture, and the environment. His current research investigates the local and global processes leading to environmental degradation and the social response to these problems, particularly in relation to urban-rural processes.
Dr. Fulkerson has extensive expertise in quantitative statistics, qualitative and textual analysis, and big data techniques employing Excel, IBM SPSS Statistics, IBM SPSS Modeler, SAS, PSPP, R, RapidMiner, Atlas Ti, Trackur, InsightMaker, and AMOS analysis software packages. He has published research in several peer-reviewed academic journals, authored books, and edited book volumes.
Dr. Fulkerson is also an Associate Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Oneonta and has been a member of the Rural Sociological Society since 2002, serving as Program Chair in 2015.
Dr. Fulkerson has won the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Scholarship and the Scholar of the Year Award in the School of Social Sciences at SUNY Oneonta (2016). He currently serves as co-editor and author for a book series with Lexington Books, called Studies in Urban-Rural Dynamics.
