The Art of Management
In his own words, Joseph Fryc '15 describes his experience in Utica College's Business Management program.
"I mainly got interested in the management program because of one of my high school teachers. He noticed that I had a particular knack for thinking on my feet when I had to. And I thought it might be nice to apply that towards management. I’ve always liked dealing with people, helping guide people, leading, that kind of thing.
The program is really great. All of the professors are experienced in the field. Most of them before coming here to teach were involved in businesses already, so they bring a lot of first-hand experience to it as opposed to information just coming from a book. They can put their own spin on things and give you good examples.
The management program has us do an internship as part of our program. Through that we are put into different businesses, and we have to apply the knowledge we gain in class to the businesses where we’re working. In my case, I have an internship in the Barrett Fine Art Gallery at UC. I am in a management position there, and I direct all the other students in what they need to do during the day. I make all the work schedules.
The faculty has been really great. They’re always very helpful. I can always go to their offices and get help if I need to. They’re always available, and they offer quite a bit of knowledge that they can bring to the table. They’re always happy to give you information that they have.
My concentration in the management program has been marketing. That’s been my focus for the past few years. I think I’ve always been interested in marketing. It’s nice, because you’re not only selling the business, you’re selling yourself. And it helps in any of your interactions in the workplace.
When I came to the college, I didn’t have an interest in the arts. I kind of ended up in the art gallery by accident. I was supposed to be placed in the Business office. That didn’t pan out, so they offered me the art gallery. So I took the management position. It's been really interesting.
Getting ready for an art exhibition is actually quite a bit of work. You have to coordinate all of the students who come in to help hang the art work. We do all of our shows completely student-produced, so we make all of the content that goes up on the walls, we hang the art work, we send out the PR, and then we host the reception where people come in and interact with the artists."
