Professor Emeritus Sandra Welch passes at age 80
Utica College lost a Professor Emeritus, a colleague, and a friend in October 2018 with the passing of Sandra “Sandy” Welch on October 16, 2018 at the age of 80.
Professor Welch began her Utica College career in 1986 as Assistant Professor of Nursing. On June 1, 1999, she was promoted to Associate Professor of Nursing, the position from which she retired with emeritus status in 2006. She served as Director of Nursing from 1998-1999. Prior to joining UC, she served on the faculties of Hartwick College and MVCC.
Professor Welch received her diploma from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Syracuse, her B.S. in Nursing from what was then SUNY College of Technology, and her master's degree in Nursing with a focus in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing from Syracuse University.
A vigorous advocate for health care services among rural populations and, with Distinguished Professor Emerita of Psychology Polly Ginsberg, Professor Welch launched a major research initiative in Madison County that led to a needs assessment report.
In 1995, she took a one-year leave of absence to serve as Administrator of Psychiatric Services at St. Luke's Hospital. She was dedicated to and active in service to the College, her department, and the local community.
She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends as well as golf, and was a member of the Cedar Lake Golf Club. She especially loved to spend time with her grandchildren, friends and pets, especially her dog, Sparky. Most of all she enjoyed being a devoted, loving and caring mom.
Professor Welch leaves her daughter, MaryAnne; her sons, James, Daniel, and Timothy; and a number of grandchildren.
