Communication and Media Department
What We Do
The Communication and Media Department prepares you for careers in a variety of fields by helping you develop foundational and advanced communication skills that transfer to any job or industry as well as graduate study.
As a Communication and Media major at Utica University, you will gain practical skills and compelling insights into what communication is and how it works. You will collaborate with talented peers and accomplished faculty.
You can be involved with The Tangerine student newspaper, our campus television outlet Utica Television, our campus radio station WPNR-FM, and Utica University’s theatrical productions. As a Communication and Media major, you can specialize in one of the following eight different concentration areas:
- Communication & Social Justice
- Communication Arts
- Creativity Studies
- Journalism
- Public Relations
- Sports Communication
- Sports Journalism
- Theatre
Utica University Communication and Media graduates have gone on to work at organizations such as The Wall Street Journal, ESPN, NBC, Glimmerglass Opera, The Miami Marlins, The Stanley Theatre, WKTV NEWSChannel 2, Corning Inc., and numerous other regional and local businesses, media outlets, and non-profit organizations. Our students regularly hold competitive internships at local, regional and national organizations, and have won awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association and the Syracuse Press Club. Our graduates have won Pulitzer Prizes and Emmy awards.

WPNR-FM The Tangerine Student Newspaper Utica Television
The Communication and Media Department hosts Films of Thursday - a free, eclectic film series that is open to the public. Films on Thursday has been part of the Utica community for more than 20 years.
