Physical Therapy Prof. Jim Smith Receives National Award
Recognized for Outstanding Contributions to Profession
James M. Smith, professor of physical therapy at Utica College, received the New York Physical Therapy Association's (NYPTA) Dr. Marilyn Moffat Distinguished Service Award recently.
Smith was selected for going above and beyond to advance and promote the profession of physical therapy. He was honored for his outstanding involvement and accomplishments in education, organizations, and demonstrations to promote the physical therapy profession.
Smith has received multiple honors and awards throughout his professional career. In 2016, he received the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy’s James Dunleavy Distinguished Service award. Smith also received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development’s (NISOD) Excellence Award in 2003, and American Physical Therapy Association’s F.A. Davis Award for Outstanding Physical Therapist Assistant Educator in 2002.
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Northeastern University in 1984. He completed his master’s degree in psychology at the University of Hartford in 1995. Smith was the founding director of the Connecticut Community College’s Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Naugatuck Valley Community College and graduated its first class in 1998. Smith joined Utica College in 2005 and he earned his doctorate in physical therapy from Simmons College in 2006.
