1. INTRODUCTION

The Applied Ethics Institute at Utica College organizes an annual colloquium series, policy working groups, and conferences, under the direction of Christopher A. Riddle.

The Institute also produces a newsletter that is distributed thrice-annually, updating readers on recent developments in the field, of which this is the 13th issue.  The newsletter contains information about upcoming conferences, recent publications, calls for papers, and related fellowships. We hope that the newsletter will be of interest to anyone working in the field, whether in academia, the broader community, public service, or various non-governmental organizations.

2. UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE APPLIED ETHICS INSTITUTE AT UTICA COLLEGE

At 6:00 pm on Thursday, February 23, 2017, Professor Katherine A. Wayne will give a public lecture titled "Wasting Meat and Wasting Animals: What is Lost in Food Loss Discourse?". The talk will be hosted hosted in Carbone Auditorium on Utica College's campus at 1600 Burrstone Rd., Utica, NY. Professor Wayne suggests that when animals are killed in everyday agricultural practices, some are not used for their intended purpose (to be consumed). Such “food loss” may occur at any level of the production, distribution, retail, and consumer process; the meat they become may be tainted, lost in transit, improperly stored, or simply forgotten in the fridge. As a food type (e.g. alongside produce), meat is recognized as pervasively – as well as avoidably and therefore unacceptably – wasted in many industrialized nations, including the U.S. and Canada. She considers how language surrounding animals raised for food, in particular the food loss discourse, prevents experts and consumers from seeing the corresponding loss of animal lives. Animal welfare defenders, whether meat-eating or not, have reason to pay attention to this disparity and its linguistic and social origins - though doing so may result in rejecting welfarism in favour of rights.

At 6:00 pm on Thursday, April 13, 2017, Professor Nicole Hassoun will give a public lecture titled "Individual Responsibility for Promoting Global Health: The Case for a New Kind of Socially Conscious Consumption". The talk will be hosted hosted in Carbone Auditorium on Utica College's campus at 1600 Burrstone Rd., Utica, NY. Professor Hassoun will discuss the problems of global health and suggest that one way of addressing these problems is to use a new rating system for pharmaceutical companies’ medicines’ impact on global health (global-health-impact.org). She will suggest that consumers have obligations to purchase products from companies that positively contribute to the global health of the millions of individuals suffering and dying young from diseases like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and malaria.
