1. INTRODUCTION
The Applied Ethics Institute at Utica College organizes an annual colloquium series, policy working groups, and conferences, under the direction of Christopher A. Riddle.
The Institute also produces a newsletter that is distributed thrice-annually, updating readers on recent developments in the field, of which this is the 15th issue. The newsletter contains information about upcoming conferences, recent publications, calls for papers, and related fellowships. We hope that the newsletter will be of interest to anyone working in the field, whether in academia, the broader community, public service, or various non-governmental organizations.
If you would like to be added to the mailing list for this newsletter, simply send an e-mail to ethics-newsletter-request@utica.edu with "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" as the subject, respectively.

2. UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE APPLIED ETHICS INSTITUTE AT UTICA COLLEGE
The following colloquia will take place this fall at The Applied Ethics Institute:
October 26 - Ryan Muldoon, SUNY Buffalo
“The Paradox of Diversity”
At 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 26, 2017, Professor Ryan Muldoon will give a public lecture titled "The Paradox of Diversity". The talk will be hosted hosted in Carbone Auditorium on Utica College's campus at 1600 Burrstone Rd., Utica, NY.
Professor Muldoon will argue that the empirical literature on diversity in groups points in two opposite directions. First, diversity makes us notably better off and improves group performance in a number of contexts. Second, we don't like being in diverse groups, and we think we do worse in them. He suggests that the core tension is that part of what makes diversity good for us is that friction that it creates. We have an apparent trade-off between social welfare and individual well-being. He argues that this can be mitigated by greater investment in Millian autonomy, but that we still face the issue of how we can make people pay that upfront cost for something they don't like in the first place, with only a promise of benefits later.

November 30 - Serife Tekin, Daemen College
“Grief, Depression, and Justice in Mental Health Care”
At 6:00 pm on Thursday, November 30, 2017, Professor Serife Tekin will give a public lecture titled "Grief, Depression, and Justice in Mental Health Care". The talk will be hosted hosted in Carbone Auditorium on Utica College's campus at 1600 Burrstone Rd., Utica, NY.
Professor Tekin notes that in the latest edition of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the DSM-5, the bereavement exclusion criterion has been removed from the diagnostic criteria for a Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Thus, the DSM-5 now individuates grief-related emotional struggles following a significant loss as MDD, by highlighting their similar symptoms. The controversial debate on whether to remove the bereavement exclusion from the DSM’s depression criteria has mostly focused on whether depression and grief related distress are in fact distinct. In this talk, she uses a different argument to address the problems inherent in this change. Even if we assume that there is no meaningful difference between the properties of grief-related distress and depression, evaluating the two on a par presents ethical challenges in the just addressing the needs of persons going through grief.
