Severe Weather
Utica University operates four campus locations: the campus in Utica, NY (including Burrstone Road and Clark City Center) as well as sites in Syracuse, NY; Miramar, FL; and St. Petersburg/Tampa, FL. Upstate New York and Florida are regions that experience severe weather events, including winter storms and tropical storms/hurricanes.
In rare instances when the weather conditions or forecast warrant canceling or delaying day and/or evening classes and activities, the University’s severe weather procedures prioritize making those decisions and communicating with the College community as quickly as possible. Information is disseminated through Utica University channels (Utica Alert, global email, website homepage, social media, and the outgoing switchboard message) serve as the official Utica University communication.
Primary considerations include the timing, severity, intensity, and expected duration of the weather event; the anticipated road conditions; and, above all else, the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
If classes and/or activities are canceled at the main campus in Utica, NY due to weather conditions, the following campus services will remain in operation.

- Residential Living
- Dining Services
- Integrated Information Technology Services
- Facilities Management
- Student Health Center
- Strebel Student Center (limited operations)
- Frank E. Gannett Memorial Library (if conditions permit)
- Clark Athletic Center (if conditions permit)
- The Hutton Sports and Recreation Center (if conditions permit)
The Office of Emergency Management regularly monitors the National Weather Service and other National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) agencies for severe weather events, and consults with state and local police, fire, EMS, and DOT personnel.
In the event of a severe weather forecast, the Vice President for Emergency Management will gather intelligence and will provide a recommendation to the President and the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The President and/or the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs will make the ultimate decision regarding any changes to the University’s operating status (e.g. cancellation of classes/activities, delayed start, closing of designated administrative areas, et cetera).
Employees who support campus services (listed previously) that remain operational during weather-related cancellations should be routinely made aware by their supervisor (i.e. well before a severe weather incident) of their responsibilities during severe weather.
A mass notification system is used to advise the University community, or relevant sub-groups within the University community (e.g. the Miramar, FL ABSN site), of severe weather warnings, cancellations, and/or other severe weather-related issues. This may include Utica Alert (text messaging and e-mail), social media, switchboard outgoing message, and a website emergency banner.

Day and evening classes canceled on Monday; normal operations are suspended until 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Effective immediately, Utica University is suspending normal operations through 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, December XX, due to the severe weather conditions in the Utica area. All day and evening classes are canceled during this time period. Classes will resume tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. Online classes will be held as scheduled.
Limited campus services, including Campus Safety, Facilities Management, and Dining Services will remain open. The Library will close at X:XX p.m. tonight and re-open at X:XX a.m. tomorrow. The Clark Athletic Center will close at X:XX p.m. tonight and re-open at X:XX a.m. tomorrow. The Hutton Sports and Recreation Center (Dome) will close at X:XX p.m. tonight and re-open at X:XX a.m. tomorrow.
