Recycling and Sustainability Guidelines

RECYCLING:
As of July 5, 2011, Single-Stream recycling is in effect and the need to sort certain recyclables (paper, cardboard, containers) is not required. Note: Plastic bags, except for holding shredded paper, are not allowed.
1. PAPER/CARDBOARD WASTE (includes newspapers, magazines, catalogs, paperback books, envelopes, small cardboard):
All Areas:
Place in any shape or color basket designated for recycling.
Do’s and Don’ts:
- Please place large cardboard boxes in the hallway for pickup by the custodial crew.
- DO NOT recycle: napkins, tissues, paper towels, paper plates, wax paper.
- Staples and paper clips are allowed.

- Plastic bottles and containers with a #1,2,3,4, 5, and 7 in a triangle on the container bottom are recyclable (remove lids and caps first). #6’s are not recyclable.
- All glass bottles and jars are recyclable.
- Milk/juice cartons and boxes are recyclable.
- Metal cans, aerosol cans, and aluminum foil are recyclable.
- Look for fund raising boxes in the hallways for $.05 deposit bottles! Otherwise, place in regular recycle basket.
- DO NOT recycle: cups, plastic lids, plastic bags, straws, bottle caps.
- All electronic waste must be recycled as required by the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act.
- All electronic waste, including computers, monitors, printers, copiers can be recycled by calling the Computer Help Desk at x3115 - collected on a periodic basis.
- Cell phones, CD’s, DVD’s, pagers, headphones, PDA’s, calculators, empty ink cartridges can be recycled by dropping off at the Computer Help Desk.
- Donate your ink cartridges to G.R.R.O.W.L.S (Golden Retriever Rescue Operated with Love Statewide) by dropping them off at Carol Downing’s office, room 214 Faculty Center. $1 is donated for each cartridge received!
- Recycle by taking to the library.
- Leave in hallways for custodial crew to pick up.
- For large number of books, contact Facilities Management at x3191 for pickup.
- All rechargeable batteries MUST be recycled by law. All other types and sizes can also be recycled.
- Bring your old batteries to the Computer Help Desk or the Office of Environmental Health and Conservation, room 279 Gordon Science Center.
- For residence halls (except Alumni), take your old batteries to the collection baskets located behind the lobby reception areas.
- Place in hallway for pickup by the custodial crew.
- Small pieces like peanuts should be placed in a plastic garbage bag.
- Visit the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority Web site at http://www.ohswa.org for more information.
DO YOUR PART FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY:
- Use 2-sided copying whenever possible to save paper.
- Turn off lights when leaving a room.
- Report leaking faucets, showers, toilets to Facilities Management x3191, or use the ‘work request form’ (for faculty and staff only) on the Facilities Management Web page www.utica.edu/request.
- Use recycled scratch pads available from the Copy Center in Gordon Science Center, first floor.
- Carpool, bicycle, or walk to your destination.
